D and N have always enjoyed food. I know this because on my first Skype ‘dunch’ date with A, they devoured all three extra servings of honey glazed salmon and chocolate dipped strawberries. Since then, they’ve started cooking for themselves, and I’ve been the one vicariously gobbling up their culinary experiments as D posts them on Facebook. When I realized I’d finally be able to see them again (I last saw them at a New Year’s Eve reunion in Blacksburg), I knew my stomach would be content. Their kitchen runs as smoothly as a ship (unlike their boat), and as we divvied up chopping, frying and baking tasks, even cleaning up dishes as we went, I realized I had missed our easy camaraderie, and was grateful to be able to fall quickly back into the friendship we had back at VT. Oh, and as for the actual food: this red curry balances the kick of Thai spices with a mellow coconut milk base. I took seconds even as I anticipated the dessert on its way.
